Gastric Ulcer Mystery Solved:
The stomach and upper small intestines are known as “Gastric” organs. Gastric inflammation (gastritis) and ulcers (peptic ulcers) can be your stomach and small intestines biggest nightmare. For many years the cause of these two diseases remained a mystery until a little over two decades ago. In October 2005 the greatest scientific medicine achievement award known as Nobel Prize was given to two physician researchers for discovering the cause of gastritis and peptic ulcers back in 1984 (Marshall etal 1984). These scientists discovered and cultured unknown bacteria that live in the stomachs of half the world's population including children and adults. This bacterium species was eventually named Helicobacter Pylori (abbreviated as H. Pylori) (Goodwin etal 1989).
H. Pylori bacteria cause more than 90% of upper small intestines duodenal ulcers and up to 80% of stomach ulcers (Dunn etal 1997). This pathogenic bacteria causes these diseases in almost 15% of people that carry the bacteria. These numbers mean that hundreds of millions of people around the world have a good chance of developing gastritis and/or peptic ulcers at some point in their lifetime! The bacteria live in the stomach for decades until the opportunity is there to become active and inflame or ulcerate the digestive track. Gastritis and peptic ulcers are not only painful but they also have serious health or life consequences.

Gastric Cancers:
Another recent and remarkable discovery is that gastric ulcers are primary triggers of gastric cancer. Over 80% of people with gastric cancer are infected with H. Pylori bacteria. Another cancer known as Gastric Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is also strongly linked to infection with H. Pylori bacteria (Wotherspoon etal 1991). 92% of these lymphoma cancer victims are infected with H. Pylori bacteria. Furthermore, recent studies are linking H. Pylori bacteria with other diseases (Suzuki etal 2006). These findings make H. Pylori bacteria and gastritis and peptic ulcers serious threats to most people's health and life.

Most of us carry these ulcer-causing bacteria in our stomachs without realizing it! We are literally a time bomb for an ulcer development under the right stress, poor nutrition conditions, or a genetic weakness. Some of us will even develop a stomach cancer as a result of the ulcer.
